Saturday Summary, August 11, 2012

I just had a birthday yesterday, and on the whole, it was a good day.  I'd like to say that today I'm both a year older and a year wiser, but sadly, I think only the former is true.

Music -- I've worked on various music projects this week, most of them not to completion.  I finished a piano arrangement of Come, Thou Almighty King, which I'll be playing in church tomorrow.  I've been working on some 12-bell arrangements for a set I've been asked to write, and I worked on one or two other handbell projects, one of which is nearly finished.  I'm discovering just how much I can really get done in little 20 and 40-minute bursts while my son naps, and am actually getting more done than I had thought I would.

Writing -- I've kept my goal of a thousand words every day this week, so that's good.  I'm nearly done with a very broad, very open outline of one of the later books in The Sadonian Chronicles series, and once that's done, I'll go on to do the next, clear up until the series is all charted out.  Then, I'll bury myself in the actual writing to try to get the thing done.

I also sold another electronic copy of Fealty and Fire this week, bringing the sum total of copies I've sold to ... three.  If you are at all intrigued by children's/young adult fantasy, I invite you to check out both Fealty and Fire and its prequel, The Coming of the Heroes.  Even if you don't read that genre, if you know anyone who does, I'd ask you to please spread the word about them to anyone you think might be interested.

End of shameless pitch.  Thank you.

Publishing -- There was actually movement on the publishing front today.  I had two string orchestra pieces I'd submitted to a publisher several months ago (they only review in the summer, so I knew I had a long wait in store), and they passed on both pieces.  Within the hour, I had them off at another publisher, so now the waiting begins anew.

I also sent off several handbell pieces this week, all of them commissions of one sort or another.  I'm pleased to say that the commission I wrote for the 2013 Georgia Spring Festival, Into the Wilderness, has been picked up by Beckenhorst, and will be available for registrants to purchase before the festival in early March.  I've also got a good feeling about another commission I sent off, this one a piece I wrote for a church in Centreville, VA.  Once I have something firm on this one, I'll share the news here.

All in all, it's been a good week.  I feel like I've been productive, like the notes are flowing freely and well, and like I'm occasionally bringing a project here and there to completion.  Now, if I can just stay on this track, I'll be in good shape.

Have a fantastic week, and we'll look for you back here on Wednesday!
