Saturday Summary, March 31, 2012

After a couple of topsy-turvy weeks, things are finally getting back to some semblance of normalcy, or at least a new normal.  Despite all the changes associated with becoming a father, I've still had a fairly large swath of time to continue with my various creative projects.  It's been two weeks since a Saturday Summary, so hopefully I'll remember all that's happened in that time.

Music -- I finished up a Christmas medley that a publishel had been interested in and got that sent off, and have started in earnest on a commission that is due quite soon.  I had started this commission before, but as I got in to it a couple of days ago, I found I liked it less and less, so I scrapped the whole thing and am starting over from scratch.  I think I like this new version better, but it's still too early to say.

I have other projects coming up on the docket, but fortunately nothing else with an impending deadline, so I've got some wiggle room with when I work on them.

Writing -- After I finish this commission and one other project, I plan on turning my attention to Fealty and Fire and getting it publication-worthy.  It's not too far off now, but like all my writing, I tend to be my own worst critic, so when I go back to look at the book again this time through, I'm sure I'll find all manner of things I just can't stand about it, and which will need to be rewritten.

Publishing -- There's been a surprisingly large amount of movement on this front in the past couple of weeks.  First, I proofed a set of violin solos with piano accompaniment (actually did most of that while my wife was in labor -- strange experience there), then proofed a short 2-3 octave handbell arrangement coming out this summer from SoundForth.

I've had contracts to sign, received comp copies of some of my newest pieces, (Fum, Fum, Fum and Sleep in Heavenly Piece, both of which are coming out this spring from Beckenhorst -- really excited about both of them), and even had some good news on a set of 12-bell Christmas arrangements I'd sent off a while back.

While that may not seem like much, the fact that I was able to accomplish all of that, plus start figuring out this whole "father" thing, plus be preparing myself, my handbell ensemble, and my choir for Holy Week ... well, I won't complain.  I've got several free days this week for working, so hopefully I can keep whittling away at that list of pieces and finally get working once more on my book.

In the meantime, I wish you all the very best of Holy Weeks, and a very wonderful and creative day!
