Saturday Summary, July 14, 2012

It's been a week of both success and extreme, extreme frustration here at the Krug household.  Surprisingly, much of it revolves around the same two projects....

Music -- I've spent the lion's share of this week working on a commission for an upcoming festival.  I've had the idea in my mind for several weeks and have been slow in starting to compose it.  The more I got into it this week, the more dead-ends and roadblocks I hit.  I tend to have pretty good luck with rough drafts of pieces, and even if things get changed later, I can usually work through a rough draft in just a few days.  It's taken me the better part of two weeks just to get the rough draft done, and even then, I think there are major flaws in the piece that need addressed.  So, while I'm thrilled I got the rough draft done, it's still been an exercise in frustration.

Writing -- The same can be said about writing.  I'll get to the Year of Insanity 2 update here in a moment.

Earlier this week, my cover designer, Donna Casey, finished up the files for my second book, Fealty and Fire, so it's now available for purchase.  I had hoped to have the print version up sometime this week -- the electronic versions have been up since about Tuesday.  Thanks to a long, protracted struggle with both Word 2010 and CreateSpace, it's still not available.  The first interior file I uploaded was totally fine ... except for the header on the very last page of the novel.  So, being a bit of a perfectionist, I re-uploaded the file with the correction made (after wrestling with Word for the better part of a half hour and finally throwing in the towel and deleting the header on that page).  When I reviewed the files this morning, CreateSpace had added an extra margin around everything and shrunk my pages.  So I uploaded a third file, and I'm hoping this time that it will all stick.  If everything goes well, I'll be posting here within twenty-four hours that the print version is available for purchase.

Hopefully.

As for the Year of Insanity 2, the writing is going well. I've made my thousand-word goal every day since July 1, and have spent most of those words working on a very detailed synopsis for the remaining books of The Sadonian Chronicles.  I'm still in the middle of the synopsis for book 3 (it's at about 8,000 words right now and will probably run out to 15,000 or more by the time all is said and done.  Worries me about the final length of the actual book ...), and after that plan on synopsizing (is that a word?) the remainder of the series before getting to the work of writing the novels.  Not sure how much of the actual noveling will fall under YoI2, but hopefully at least one book can be done before July of 2013.

Publishing -- I received this week contracts and proofs for two more of my upcoming Beckenhorst releases -- In the Garden and Were You There?  They should be making their debut toward the end of 2012.  Other than that, it was a quite week on the publishing front.

That's all from here.  I'll apologize in advance if Wednesday's post is a bit late, as I'll be at the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar.  If you're there, come say hello.  If you're not, you'll probably hear all about it in blog form.

Have a great week!
