For the first time, I have a reason to celebrate this weekend as the showeree of Father's Day affection, and not just the showerer. Truthfully, though, I'm just happy with the little steps and strides (for now, metaphorical) that I see my son taking every day -- the smiles first thing in the morning, the laughing, the ability to hurl his pacifier great distances, and, just yesterday, both the ability to and knowledge of when he should turn a page when we're reading a book to him (gotta tell ya, cool, but kind of creepy).
Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there.
Music -- This was a remarkably music-free week. I did jot down about 2 measures of a commission (but as they're whole notes on various octaves of low Cs, I'm not sure that really means much), but otherwise spent most of my free time trying to sort around the two classes I'll be teaching at the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar. I've pretty much got the presentation for one finished up, and ought to have the other one done by Monday or Tuesday. Then, after that, I get to turn my attention back to what I like best, which is throwing notes at a blank page and seeing what sticks.
Writing -- Well, it's official -- I'm throwing in the towel on Camp NaNoWriMo for the month. I just got far enough behind in my word count that catching up was going to be a royal pain, and I lacked the discipline to carry on. I still like the story I started, but I don't think I was fully committed to writing it in June.
That being said, my insanity is kicking in to high gear, and I potentially have another Year of Insanity idea in the works, one which will probably start on July 1 and will involve writing instead of composing. (For those of you who missed the prior Year of Insanity, you can read about it here.) Think of this as Year of Insanity 2: Stark Raving Mad ... or something like that.
Publishing -- I received this week my comp copies of both of my new versions of 'Twas In the Moon of Wintertime -- a level 1 handbell arrangement from Soundforth, and a level 2+ string orchestra arrangement from Grand Mesa Music. I'm excited about both of them, especially since both are on the Editors' Choice list at J.W. Pepper. Other than that, not much movement on the publishing front.
I did spend some time this week updating information found throughout The Creative, mainly my biography, (published) compositions, and forthcoming works. Also, all the pieces on the Compositions page for which I have audio files ought now to have those files linked, so feel free to listen as much as you'd like!
And now it's off to dream big dreams, think insane thoughts, finish up a presentation for a handbell class ... and clean the house since we're having my father over for Father's Day. If nothing else, by the time I go to sleep tonight, I ought to have a cleaner house.
