Every Saturday, The Creative will feature a brief post about my current creative efforts and how they are progressing. If this doesn't interest you, read no further -- not only will I not be offended, I'll never know. The usual creativity-centric posts will return on Sunday.
As I alluded to in my Wednesday post, today my wife and I are at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds for the Capital Area Handbell Festival. Not only is my Winter's Waltz one of the featured pieces, but I actually get a chance to ring -- no directing, no worrying about what everyone else is doing ... just play my bells and make some music. I'm ecstatic!
That being said, I do have some other news to report in my own creative life:
Music -- All right, I guess I didn't do anything here this week. It's been focusing my attention on my writing life. See below...
Writing -- I've actually done quite a lot of this, mainly because of National Novel Writing Month. If you want to keep track of my progress, check out the cool blue widget at the left of the screen. Plot-wise, I've finally managed to get my main character, Harold, out of his hometown and on the cross-country trek I need him to go on, so that's promising. Now I just need to write him through his journey and get him to where he's supposed to go so the story can get to the important part.
Publishing -- I have a lot to report here, none of it the sort of thing to skip and sing over. I managed to get six pieces (one handbell, two choral, and three organ) rejected in the space of about eighteen hours, which is a new personal record. Still, I tell myself that the only reason I'm getting so many rejections is because I'm sending so many pieces out into the world, and most of these rejections are because I'm branching out, trying to write for ensembles and mediums I'm not comfortable writing for. It doesn't mean I'm thrilled with the rejections, just that they're good things. I think....
Stay tuned later today when, if the rumors I've heard about wireless internet access on the NC State Fairgrounds are true, I hope to post a live update or two from the handbell festival. If not, check back tonight when I'll post a wrap-up from the hotel wireless. Until then, keep on creating, and post your successes (or productive "failures") in the comments selection below.
