Saturday Summary, November 20, 2010

Every Saturday, The Creative will feature a brief post about my current creative efforts and how they are progressing.  If this doesn't interest you, read no further -- not only will I not be offended, I'll never know.  The usual creativity-centric posts will return on Sunday.

Since NaNoWriMo is still in full swing, it's not hard to guess how much of my time was spent this week.  That being said, there were still a couple of other events worth sharing in this slightly-late Saturday Summary post.

Music -- I worked a very brief bit on a choral arrangement of O Come, All Ye Faithful for our choir to use at its Christmas concert.  It's actually based pretty heavily on my handbell arrangement (at least in the accompaniment), so it's more an adaptation than an actual composition, but I think it should work well as an opener to our concert this December.

Other than that, any music I did was playing piano as I practiced with my wife's choirs for their Christmas concert, coming up on December 1.

Writing -- I didn't write as much as I'd actually thought I would this past week.  I'm at 38,000 words, give or take, and my story hasn't progressed too much.  I have managed to get my main character's car stolen, as well as his last piece of luggage.  Right now he's on the side of the road in a little place called Great Bend, Kansas with the clothes on his back and about eighty-five dollars, and no clue where he's supposed to go, except for the fact that Destiny is pulling him onward.  If I'm supremely lucky, I ought to get some writing time later today, so maybe I can get him to where he's going.

Publishing -- When I got home and checked the mail Monday afternoon, I had a letter in there from Hope Publishing, accepting my handbell arrangement of Come, Christians, Join to Sing, which should be coming out in their Spring 2012 crop (which actually comes out in late 2011).  That makes a grand total of 44 handbell pieces accepted for publication, 4 piano pieces, and 1 string piece, with a couple other pieces as good likely contenders for acceptance.

As the year winds down -- and as things pick up at school with the kids and NaNoWriMo -- it's getting harder and harder to find my own time to do my creative work.  It feels like right now, I'm spending all my time working for someone else or helping someone else achieve their creative dream.  And I suppose that's okay; it seems like part of the natural ebb-and-flow of things, so if I just keep with it and keep doing what I'm doing, I have every faith that my own personal creative journey will feel an upswing sometime in the near future.

Does anyone else have any creative triumph or tribulation they'd like to share?  The comments section is below -- share away!
