One more, and September Update

Just heard from Bill Griffin that Beckenhorst is going to accept my latest original, a piece I dedicated to my church's music ministries entitled Answer the Call.  That makes twenty-one accepted, and two accepted from the Year of Insanity.

Also received the September/October edition of Overtones Magazine today with my O Come, O Come Emmanuel.  Looks good, save for the fact my copy of the magazine looked like it had been chewed on by something or someone.

Speaking of the Year of Insanity, I'm at ten pieces written since starting August 1, with an eleventh very soon to be done (probably by Friday).  That puts me a little ahead of the game, though I'd like to be farther ahead, so hopefully October will be a composition-filled month.

And an Even Twenty...

Just heard from Doug Wagner at Lorenz yesterday, and he's accepted my arrangement of Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown.  That brings me up to a round twenty pieces published, which is almost impossible to believe, given that about thirteen months ago, the number was three.  I did also hear back on some of my choral pieces I sent to Lorenz, and they passed on them, so I've sent them on to Hope to try my luck there.

What is even more important is that, with the acceptance of Come, O Thou Traveler, the Year of Insanity is a success.  With taking time to write every morning and trying to get something like 48 pieces written in a year, part of me had wondered if it was worth it, and here, barely six weeks into the experiment, it's already proven successful.  I try never to get too deep and philosophical, but I wonder if it is a success because I'm just a good composer, or if it's because I actually have worked, written, and then put my work out there.  I strongly believe it's the latter, and has almost nothing to do with the former.  It does make me wonder how many more people could be successful -- not just in publishing, but in any endeavor they wanted -- if they would but take the leap and try it.  I do feel very fortunate that most pieces I have submitted have eventually been picked up for publication, but I also know that none of them would have been accepted if I had not first written them, then actually taken the step to submit them.  If only more people would do that -- with their music, their books and stories, their artwork and photos -- how much more and better art would be in the world for all to enjoy.

Anyway, our total for the Year of Insanity now stands at 9 pieces finished, and I hope to be around a dozen by the end of the month, which will put me a month ahead of the game.  More later.

August "Year of Insanity" Update

August has come and gone, and with it, six new pieces.  I finished the last one, a SATB choral piece called In the Silence just this past weekend, and sent both it and Raise Your Voice to Highest Heaven off to Beckenhorst for consideration.  As near as I can tell, that puts me two pieces ahead of the game, but I hope not to squander that advantage.  Right now I'm working on finishing up another string orchestra piece, this time an original, and after that ... who knows?

I also have already seen and approved the proofs for the string orchestra arrangement of We Three Kings.  Over the course of about an hour and a half on Saturday, I exchanged maybe a half dozen emails with Lynne Latham, and at the end of it, she sent a .pdf of the proof.  Fastest turn-around time I've ever seen on a piece before, not that I'm complaining.

I should hear about some of my other pieces in the next few weeks -- it's starting to reach that minimum two-month time limit most publishers give as the fastest they'll respond on submissions, and rest assured I'll post any news I hear right here.

Onward and upward!
